Mahya and Ali Salari: A Father’s Heartbreaking Identification

The Tragic Loss of Mahya and Ali Salari

The aftermath of the school bombing forced parents into unimaginable horrors. Today, we document the devastating story of Mahya and Ali Salari, two young students killed alongside their mother, Zahra Mirdadi. Their grieving father was left to search through the ruins of a half-destroyed, half-leveled building to find his loved ones.

The Agony of Identifying Martyred Family Members

Rescue workers only pulled one intact body from Ali's classroom. Consequently, the father faced the horrific task of identifying martyred family members from mere fragments. He identified his wife's hand by her wedding ring. Heartbreakingly, he identified his son, Mahya and Ali Salari, by a half-burned box of colored pencils clutched in a severed hand. The name Ali Salari was written clearly on the surviving pencils.

Today, a deafening silence fills their home. The father has arranged a memorial table holding their school uniforms, a small prayer rug, dolls, and a ball. This agonizing reality mirrors the DNA identification trauma we explored previously. It violates every principle of the Human Rights Watch civilian protection mandates.
